Biggest Bad Beat Jackpot in Black Hawk:  Lodge Poker Room  $400,000
Congrats to Spencer Uniss for winning the HPT Main Event at Golden Gates!
The Isle of Capri Poker Room is now OPEN.

Trip report from the new Isle Poker Room:

I visited the new poker room on their opening night (Tuesday, April 12th), arriving at about 9:30pm.  There were four 1/2 100 SL games running and a few seats open so I got a seat right away. A 1/2 100SL Omaha 8 game started shortly after I arrived.

What I liked:
The room is isolated from the rest of the casino, which I like personally.  I don’t like slots ringing or a band playing 10 feet from my table.  Maybe I’m getting old (oh wait, I AM getting old….dammit!).  There are plenty of big TV’s and the chairs were comfy.  The cocktail tables are gigantic and high which is great – 9 handed tables allow for the room I guess.  I do like 9 handed tables myself, but the Black Hawk poker community has rejected that – the Golden Gates tried that and went ten handed shortly after opening.  There’s a bar and cocktail servers dedicated to the poker room which is really nice.  The service was a bit slow when I was there, but that’s probably just opening day stuff.  The staff was super-friendly.  There’s a restroom right there in the poker room with a TV embedded into the mirror (for those of us who actually wash our hands).

What I disliked:
While isolated from the rest of the casino, the room was “too” quiet for my taste.  Some music or even sports talk from the TV’s would have been nice.  The room is using the “Jumbo” KEM cards which I despise – but the Manager says he will be switching those out to the regular KEMS that most of the poker world is used to.  I’m not a fan of the rail that has the drink holders in them.  Again, just a personal preference.  When you actually have a beer bottle in there it’s just in the way.  I used the cocktail tables instead.

The felt on the tables was different…in a bad way.  It was difficult to pick up cards and players and dealers alike were complaining about it when I was there.  It’ll probably loosen up in time and be fine.  There were plenty of green dealers who took 5 minutes to count their bank, had difficulty with the “forward moving button” (which I love, but Black Hawk players have resisted for more than a decade and a half), and had difficulty with side pots, player comments, etc.  But that’s all opening day jitters stuff too.  The dealers will get up to speed quickly enough.

The room is nice and a good addition to the Black Hawk poker community.  Frankly, I see their opening as the demise of the Lady
Luck poker room.  The Lady Luck manager recently left and the casino hasn’t replaced her.  Take a short walk from Lady Luck to the Isle via the enclosed walkway and you’re there in a few minutes without even going outside.  Yeah, I don’t see the Lady Luck room lasting very long.  The Isle room is offering twice the comps, great promo’s and a better general experience than Lady Luck – and they’re the same company.  The writing appears to be on the wall, but we’ll see.
